Practice listening to academic English before the test.
For practice with English in academic contexts, try listening to news broadcasts, podcasts, the radio, or audiobooks on more academic subject material. Listening to a topic you’re interested in will make things more enjoyable, and you’re likely to pick up on new terms and expressions more easily.
Build your vocabulary in a systematic way.
In order to become better at understanding all the words you hear, you need to expand your vocabulary. Find a way to keep track of new vocabulary that works for you. You could collect new words using index cards, a notebook, or a chart on your computer. Make time to review the words that you have added to your list until you are sure of their meaning.
Preview the questions.
Before each audio clip begins, you will have a short time to preview all the questions for that section. Use this time to get a general sense of what the questions are about, as well as any key words to listen for.
Pay close attention to the audio.
Each audio clip can be heard only once, so you will need to listen very carefully. Try to answer as many questions as you can while you listen. You will be provided with some time after the audio finishes to try to complete any questions you may have missed.
Decide on a note-taking strategy.
In the Listening tasks, your main focus should be answering the questions as you listen. That being said, keep in mind that you will sometimes need to use what you learned from the Listening passage to help with your Speaking or Writing task later in that test part. If you wish to take any brief notes during the audio, use some abbreviations or symbols that you think will help you take notes more quickly. Try practicing with the CAEL CE Sample Test to become better at gauging your time in these tasks.
Relax and listen.
If you can’t understand a word, phrase, or sentence, continue listening and stay focused on what you are hearing. You can still understand many main points even if you cannot understand every word. Remember that the Listening questions are generally sequential, so if you lose your place while you’re listening, it may help to look for a key word in the next question and wait until you hear that word mentioned in the audio.
Move on if you can’t answer a question.
You will be able to answer the questions in each Listening part in any order you wish, though it’s important to note that the questions are generally in sequential order to what is discussed in the audio. If you are having trouble answering a question, move to the next one and come back to it later! You will have some time after the audio finishes in order to complete any questions you missed. As with the Reading sections, make sure that you answer every question before moving to the next part.
When all else fails, make a guess!
Answer all the questions—there is no penalty for incorrect responses. Note that for multiple-choice questions with a single answer, try to eliminate the options that you know are wrong. By doing so, your chance of guessing the correct answer becomes even higher.
Manage your time.
Each part of CAEL CE has a timer on the screen, so watch the clock! Make sure that you have enough time to complete all the questions in each Listening section.
Check your answers.
Before moving to the next section of CAEL CE, make sure that you have answered all the questions on the screen. This is especially important in Listening parts, where there is no opportunity to go back and change your answer once you have clicked Next. The tabs at the top of the screen for each set of Listening questions will turn green when all the questions have been answered. Use this to check that you have completed everything.
For questions that require you to select more than one answer, make sure that you have selected the appropriate number. Other questions will require you to type a short word or phrase; regardless of what you answer here, make sure that it is spelled correctly!
Become familiar with question types.
